A spectrophotometric study of Arsenazo III and its interaction with lanthanides

Description

The inherent sensitivity associated with the use of Arsenazo III as a chromogenic ligand with metal ions makes it an ideal proposition for the analysis of the lanthanides. Under the conditions of reagent concentration and pH chosen for the experiments, it has been established that the complex which forms between Arsenazo III and the lanthanide metal ions has a ratio of 1:1. Nitrate was chosen as a suitable anion to use in maintaining constant ionic strength, since the endpoint of the Arsenazo III/lanthanide reaction was unaffected by changes in the nitrate concentration. The investigation of the Arsenazo III interaction with various lanthanides was done in the form of spectrophotometric titrations and mole fraction plots. The results of this study offer a sound basis for accurate methods of analysis of solutions with very low lanthanide concentrations. 97 refs., 44 figs., 33 tabs
