Variational principle for two-dimensional incompressible hydrodynamics and quasigeostrophic flows

A new variational principle is derived through the construction of the action in terms of a new set of canonical coordinates. The main advantage of this set of coordinates is that they contain exclusively information concerning the Eulerian description of the flow
