Recent progress at the Stanford linear collider

Description

Commissioning of the Stanford linear collider is proceeding towards an initial low luminosity physics run. Both beams are routinely extracted onto their dumps, and reasonably small beam sizes are produced at the IP. Main priorities are phase-space controls and stability in the whole machine needed to maintain small spots, background reductions, and general system reliability. Studies indicate that collimators may have to be redeployed in the final focus to upstream places where beams can be comfortably trimmed without generating excessive muons in the detector. Enhanced optical matching in the arcs through harmonic corrections is being considered to help reduce distortions in the final focus. It is hoped to produce and detect a hundred Z0
