Cancer mortality in Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Description
The now completed dosimetry revision as well as continued medical monitoring of the A-bomb survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have led to a change in conclusions drawn in regard to cancer mortality. A major result of the dosimetry revision is that neutron doses have been much lower than previously assumed. Preston and Pierce (1987) have made cancer mortality risk estimates on the basis of the new dosimetry system. Concerning the accumulated occurrence of solid tumors, the main result is that the new dosimetry system brings relatively little change. As to leukemia induction, new reduced dose estimates lead to risk estimates that are by a factor of 2 above those made with the former dosimetry system. (orig./MG)
Abstract (German)
Es werden Ueberlegungen bezueglich der Krebsmortalitaet in Hiroshima und Nagasaki angestellt, die sich aus der nunmehr abgeschlossenen Revision der Dosimetrie und aus der Fortfuehrung der Beobachtungen an den Ueberlebenden der Atombombenangriffe ergeben. Risikoschaetzungen auf der Basis der neuen Dosimetrie wurden von Preston und Pierce (1987) vorgelegt. Wesentliches Resultat der Revision der Dosimetrie ist die Bestaetigung, dass die Neutronendosen weit geringer waren, als frueher angenommen. Bezueglich der Gesamtheit solider Tumoren ergibt sich als wesentliches Resultat, dass der Einfluss der Dosisrevision relativ gering ist. Fuer Leukaemien fuehrt die Verringerung der geschaetzten Dosen zu Risikoschaetzungen, die um etwa den Faktor 2 ueber den der alten Dosimetrie entsprechenden liegen. (orig./MG)Additional details
