Observations of H2O masers in nearby galaxies

Description
The 64-m radio telescope at Parkes has been used over a period of three years to search for 22-G HzH2O maser emission in the Magellanic Clouds and other nearby galaxies. In observations towards about 80 H II regions of the Large Magellanic Cloud, only four masers were detected. Comparison with H2O observations towards H II regions in our Galaxy suggests that the maser production is considerably lower in the LMC, perhaps indicating a lower rate of star formation. Three of the maser profiles are similar, consisting of several variable components, 1-2km s-1 wide, spread over about 20km s-1. In contrast, the fourth maser has a double-peaked profile similar to those of OH masers associated with circumstellar shells. (author)
