Application of Coriolis coupling model to the quadrupole moments of odd-odd nuclei

  • 1. Punjabi Univ., Patiala (India). Dept. of Physics

Description

The strong coupling collective model of Bohr and Mottelson is used to calculate quadrupole moments of odd-odd nuclei. The odd nucleons move in Nilsson orbits in an axially symmetric deformed potential. The Coriolis coupling (which mixes up the states with ΔK = +- 1) was found to explain the failure of Gallagher's coupling rules for odd-odd nuclei. Here incorporating the Coriolis interaction, it has been shown that the quadrupole moment for a given nucleus may be enormously reduced in certain cases in spite of large deformations. In the frame-work of this Coriolis coupling model, quadrupole moment of some of the odd-odd nuclei have been calculated. The results are found in good agreement with the experimental report.
