Oxidation/reduction melting reactions in the system BaO-Y2O3-CuO(x). I - Methods
Creators
Description
A unified experimental approach is presented for the systematic study of oxidation/reduction melting reactions in the system BaO-Y2O3-CuO(x), including a combination of controlled atmosphere calcination and materials handling, controlled atmosphere quenching and annealing, powder XRD, SEM/EDX, DTA, thermogravimetric analysis, and atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The melting of the 'green phase' (BaY2CuO5) is used as an example. As this compound melts at 1268 C to a mixture of BaY2O4, Y2O3, and liquid, oxygen is lost, corresponding to a change in bulk CuO(x) from CuO sub 1.0 to CuO sub 0.48. The resulting melt lies close to the BaO-CuO(x) join, with a composition at 34 mol pct BaO, 5 mol pct YO sub 1.5, and 61 mol pct CuO(x). 9 refs
