Description
The Atomic Energy Board in South Africa is the body with the regulatory responsibility in respect of nuclear installations, this responsibility having been imposed by the Nuclear Installations (Licensing and Security) Act of 1963. In terms of this Act, a nuclear site licence shall be subject to such conditions as the Board deems necessary or desirable in the interests of health and safety. One such condition, which the Board will certainly attach to a licence will require the licensee to prepare an emergency scheme, to be implemented in the unlikely event of an accident at such an installation. The purpose of this paper is to outline the basic requirements, organisational structure and facilities that will have to be provided for in such a scheme
