Description
The main characteristics of a 220 l spherical tank for liquid hydrogen capable to stand a 30 atm operating pressure is described. Thermal insulation is obtained with silicon aerogel. Mechanical stresses and heat losses are calculated. Permanent heat losses reach 10 W and correspond to a daily evaporation of 29 l of hydrogen (13% of the full tank). Initial cooling of the tank leads to the vaporization of about 35 l of nitrogen and 10 l of hydrogen. Losses due to the ortho-para conversion may eventually add up
