Description
This report is dedicated to the decarbonization of primary steel production. Steel production in France emits around 20 million tons of CO2 per year, or 5% of French GHG emissions. Most of this is due to primary production (i.e. from ore), most of which uses coal. On the other hand, steel can be recycled, and the recovery of scrap metal enables steel to be produced with much lower emissions. Why, beyond recycling, is primary steel production still necessary? What are the technological solutions for this, and what role can carbon capture and storage, hydrogen or direct electrification play in particular? What impact will this have on value chains? These are just some of the questions addressed by the authors and their analyses. This publication is part of a series of technology foresight studies carried out by France Strategie, designed to support ecological planning by helping to identify the least costly decarbonization actions
Abstract (French)
France Strategie publie ce jour un rapport consacre a la decarbonation de la production primaire d'acier. La production d'acier emet en France environ 20 millions de tonnes de CO2 par an, soit 5 % des emissions de GES francaises. La plus grande part est due a la production primaire (c'est-a-dire a partir de minerai), majoritairement effectuee avec du charbon. Par ailleurs, l'acier est recyclable, et la recuperation de ferrailles permet une production d'acier nettement moins emissive. Pourquoi, au-dela du recyclage, une production primaire d'acier restera-t-elle necessaire? Quelles solutions technologiques pour celle-ci et quels roles, en particulier, de la capture et stockage de carbone, de l'hydrogene ou de l'electrification directe? Quels impacts pour les chaines de valeur? Autant de questions que les auteurs et leurs analyses viennent eclairer. Cette publication s'inscrit dans une serie de travaux de prospective technologique menes par France Strategie, visant a appuyer la planification ecologique en contribuant a l'identification des actions de decarbonation les moins couteuses
