KAERI-NWU Joint Research Collaboration in the System Analysis of the Passive Safe Small Modular High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor
Description
The focus of this joint research project between KAERI and the North-West University(NWU) of South Africa is the development of VHTR design and analysis technology via simulation and inter code comparisons between KAERI's GAMMA+ and NWU's Flownex. The KAERI team used GAMMA+ to simulate a range of benchmark problems on the reactor cavity cooling system of HTGR. In parallel with this the NWU team used Flownex to simulate the same set of problems. Following this, inter code comparisons were made and sources of differences were identified and evaluated in order to pinpoint potential areas of improvement of GAMMA+. The other work program includes a series of joint on site workshops to exchange technical information on HTGR and to strengthen a network of HTGR experts between the two countries. Seven experts workshops in a wide range of HTGR technologies were held under support of this project. Through the workshops, the collaborative joint research items were identified for further collaboration. And, the network of HTGR experts was updated by tracing the movement path of the South African experts.
