There are two major difficulties in the management of vaginal carcinoma. First, irradiation alone has not provided adequate results in stage III and stage IV disease. Pelvic failures and distant metastases occur in half of the patients with advanced disease. The second problem is that the results of therapy for patients with nonepithelial tumors (sarcomas, melanomas) are poor
