Description
Shipping of radioactive materials often consist of a risk of being accidentally broken during transportation to a radio pharmacy laboratory. This happens due to lack/ insufficient shock absorbent materials which can withstand an impact. Metal foam is an excellent material which can withstand a crash. It's similar to a Styrofoam (thermocol) which is used in day to day life in the transportation of electronics. Its cellular structure consists of a solid metal (usually aluminium) with gas-filled pores comprising a large portion of the volume. The pores can be sealed (closed-cell foam) or interconnected (open-cell foam). The radio-isotope will be surrounded and cushioned by one layer of soft sponge and another layer of hard sponge. The next layer will consist of Styrofoam (thermocol). This layer will be reinforced by metal foam and lastly followed by a plastic layer. A comparatively strong carrier material which will be able to withstand any type of accidents during transportation. An impact proof material in transportation of radio-active isotopes. (author)
