Results of coherent dipole beam-beam interaction studies for SSC [Superconducting Super Collider] lattices

Description

Results are presented for the stability limit of the coherent beam-beam interaction as a function of tune for simplified lattice configurations. The results are obtained from a simulation program in which the beam-beam interaction is represented by one-dimensional linear kicks, and the bunches are considered to be rigid charged objects (dipole approximation). For nominal SSC parameters we find that the coherent beam-beam interaction introduces serious instabilities only in very narrow regions of tune around integers or half-integers (depending on the symmetry of the lattice considered), and therefore does not restrict the choice of tune significantly. 7 refs., 14 figs
