Gamma scanning and gamma spectrometry measurements on irradiated pressure tubes of PHWRs

  • 1. Radiometallurgy Div., Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)

Description

Neutron irradiation affects creep and corrosion properties of zircaloy. Synergistic effect of irradiation damage by neutron flux and hydrogen/ deuterium pick up by the zircaloy during reactor operation degrades the fracture toughness of the pressure tube. Hence, to make a comprehensive study of the properties on the pressure tube, a detailed knowledge of the axial variation of the flux is needed. Gamma spectrometry and axial gamma scanning studies have been carried out on several pressure tubes to generate axial flux profile. This paper deals with the details of the experiments and the results obtained. (author)
