Mitigation of radiation buildup in the BWR by feedwater zinc addition

Description

The benefit of adding zinc to the BWR primary system as a method of reducing primary system radiation buildup was first hypothesized in 1983. Following corroborating laboratory testing, the first zinc addition system was installed at the Hope Creek plant in 1986. Currently, nine BWRs have implemented zinc addition and an additional four units are in the process of being installed. This paper provides the current status of this technology. It reviews the radiation buildup results following zinc addition and re-examines the Zn-65 outage release concern identified- at the first refueling outage for Hope Creek. The status of the search for a zinc supply depleted in Zn-64 is discussed and the potential availability schedule is provided. Recent experience on the impact of hydrogen water chemistry on BWR radiation buildup, both with and without zinc addition, is reviewed. (author)
