Natural circulation analysis of a 300 kWe lunar base reactor under decay power level

  • 1. Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corp., Oarai, Ibaraki (Japan). Oarai Engineering Center

Description

Decay heat removal capability by natural circulation of lithium coolant has been analyzed to a 300 kWe lunar-base reactor SPECTRA-L which has an auxiliary cooling loop equipped with no pump. It is shown from this study that after 5-years rated power (2 MWt) operation a natural circulation mode is smoothly established even by the acceleration of lunar gravity which is one-sixth of that on the earth and that a sufficient core flow rate appears to hold the peak coolant temperature enough under the saturation point.
