Joint project iCross: Integrity of radioactive waste disposal systems - cross-scale system understanding and system analysis. Subproject D. Final report
Description
The interdisciplinary project "iCross" brings together R&D expertise in the Helmholtz Association on the topics of nuclear, geosciences, life sciences and environmental simulations in a cross-research project. Processes that were not yet fully understood were investigated, evaluated and described from the molecular level to the regional scale. The aim was to plan and carry out laboratory experiments, derive parameters and describe relevant processes across scales using advanced simulation methods. The simulations were validated experimentally and in underground laboratories. The focus was on the Mont Terri (claystone) underground laboratory in Switzerland.

Das interdisziplinäre Vorhaben "iCross" bündelt F+E Expertisen in der Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft zu den Themen Nuklear-, Geo-, Biowissenschaften sowie Umweltsimulationen in einem forschungsbereichsübergreifenden Projekt. Dabei wurden bislang nicht vollständig verstandene Prozesse von der molekularen Ebene bis zur regionalen Skala untersucht, bewertet und beschrieben. Ziel war es, Laborexperimente zu planen und durchzuführen, Parameter abzuleiten, und relevante Abläufe skalenübergreifend mit fortgeschrittenen Simulationsmethoden zu beschreiben. Die Validierung der Simulationen erfolgte experimentell und in Untertagelabors. Der Schwerpunkt lag dabei auf dem Untertagelabor Mont Terri (Tonstein) in der Schweiz.Additional details
