Radioactive lightning conductors: protection or danger?

Description

The present article describes the various aspects involved in the utilization of radioactive material in lightning conductors, in particular the main reasons and arguments that gave support to the decision taking concerning the interruption of this practice in Brazil. It is pointed out that although the risks associated with the presence of Am-241 in lightning conductors is small, there is no in technical evidence to justify the superiority of such devices, when compared to conventional ones.
