Description
Post-irradiation annealing experiments were conducted as part of the COG-funded program on severe accident fission-product release at the Chalk River Laboratories between 1983-1992. Uranium dioxide samples with and without zircaloy sheaths were heated to temperatures in the range 573-2352 K in water, steam, and reducing gas mixtures. According to their behaviour, fission products have been grouped into four categories: noble gases (Xe and Kr), volatiles (Cs, I, Te and Tc), semi-volatiles (Ru, Nb and Sb), and low-volatiles (Ba, Zr, La, Ce, Pr, Eu, Nd and Pm). This paper focuses on the release of semi- and low-volatile fission products from bare uranium dioxide samples. Semi-volatile fission products are potentially volatile: e.g. ruthenium is released rapidly under oxidizing conditions at 973 K. The low-volatile fission products are released mainly after volatilization of the uranium dioxide itself, above 2073 K. 1 ref., 2 figs
