On the bound neutron in matter

Description

An experiment is proposed to detect possible quasibound neutron states in solids. It consists in studying transmission of 10-7 eV neutrons through three-layer targets made of two materials with different coherent scattering lengths. Energy of bound neutron states that might be formed inside such targets is determined in terms of the quasiclassical approximation. Under the circumstances the energy dependence of the neutron transmission coefficient is of a resonance character that may be observed in the experiment. To exclude the background effect of radiation capture and inelastic scattering of the neutrons the materials and temperature of the target must be properly chosen
