JK '98: Using nuclear power now and in the future

Jahrestagung Kerntechnik, the Annual Nuclear Technology conference, was held in Munich on May 26 to 28, 1998. The event was organized by the Kerntechnische Gesellschaft e.V. and the Deutsches Atomforum e.V., whose President, Dr. Wilfried Steuer, opened the plenary day. In his concluding remarks at the end of the plenary day, Prof. Knorr summarized that the organizers of the meeting had intended to present an up-to-date picture of energy policy and the utilization of nuclear power in Europe and in Germany on the basis of international and national contributions also in 1998. Knorr said that Munich as the venue of the meeting had contributed greatly to making the outlines of the status and the development of the use of nuclear power very clear. Different view points were particularly helpful whenever one's bearings had to be taken. This was a reference also to the events associated with the fuel shipping casks and the resultant attention of the media and the unexpected political topicality which dominated the entire conference.
