Compensation committee for victims of nuclear tests - Civen, Activity report 2021

Description

With 217 new claims registered, 2021 was the third year with the highest number of claims, after 2010 and 2011. 199 decisions were made over the same period, 91 of them recognizing the claimant as a victim of French nuclear tests, i.e. 46% of all cases. If we take into account only cases in which the presumption of causality provided for by law is satisfied, this recognition of victim status concerns 53% of the claims concerned. The Committee has also endeavored to meet the deadlines laid down in the legislation governing its activity, namely eight months for the decision concerning recognition of victim status and three months, once recognition has been granted and after expert appraisal, to make an offer of compensation to the victim. This level of activity has enabled the committee to maintain at 138 the number of claims under examination at the end of 2021. Total compensation paid out to victims this year exceeded 16 million euros, compared with just over 10 million euros in 2019 and 2020, again demonstrating a high level of activity. These few figures, supplemented by many others contained in the report, perfectly illustrate the determination of the Committee's members to continue the work of fair compensation for the harm suffered by victims of French nuclear tests, a mission entrusted to them by the legislator
