Formation conditions and properties of quasicrystals in Ti-Hf-Ni system

Description

On the basis of structural diagrams the concentration ranges of quasicrystal formation in the system of Ti-Hf-Ni are calculated. The formation of quasicrystals in this system is confirmed experimentally. Using X-ray diffraction analysis the icosahedral structure of quasicrystals was observed in the system studied. Parameters of quasicrystalline and amorphous structure formation (valence electron density and atomic size factor) are determined. The resistivity of quasicrystalline and amorphous phases appeared to exceed that of crystalline phases by a factor of about 2. Amorphous phases have the lowest microhardness compared to crystalline and quasicrystalline phases
