Use of quartzite waste for application on interlocking pavements

Quartzite and its residues have been studied as a suitable substitute for conventional building materials. Studies show acceptable mechanical properties in concrete produced with quartzite replacing one or more aggregates. With the environmental degradation rapidly advancing in the municipality of Várzea-PB, the search for solutions in the reutilization of the residues of the quartzite exploration in the region, grew significantly. The present work studies the use of quartzite residues for application in the lining of interlocked pavements. The quartzite was randomly separated from the residue of the deposit, then benefited by crushing and milling. After processing, chemical, physical and mineralogical characterization was performed, as well as the resistance of the test specimens. The results showed that the quartzite residues presented adequate properties for use in these floors. The results of mechanical resistance showed that the blocks had adequate properties to be used on pedestrian traffic sidewalks. (author)
