The excitation and charge transfer in the gamma-irradiated polymer particles coated with a solid monomer

Description

The particles of polyacryl amide (PAAm) were coated with small amounts (less than 5 wt%of polymer) of aromatic compounds (chrysene or P-benzoquinone) or acrylamide monomer (AAm). The particles of polyvinyl chloride(PVC)were also coated with AAm. The polymer particles so coated were irradiated with r-rays in vacuo. Then the ESR spectra of these specimens were measured. ln all the cases, the Spectra Qbtained werc cornpletely different inshapes and intensities from those obtained from the specimens of the polymer, the additives or the monomer alone. ln the case of the AAm-coated PVC, the intensities of the spectra recorded under the same experimental conditions were almost same, though the amount of the monomer was varied from O.5 to 5 wt %o of PVC. From these results, it is concluded that electrons, holes and excited states produced by ionizing radiatiens in a polymer particles come out of the polymer particle to the surface where they can be transferred to the molecules of a vinyl monomer as well as an aromatic compound adsorbed on the surface. It seems that this p lyme t monomer charge transfer observed in this work is important when a radiation-induced graft copolymerization is studied quantitatively,
