Development of computational interface for internal radiotherapy

Ths present paper is part of a research line which seeks the development of the brachytherapy coupled with NCT (Neutron Capture Therapy), specifically to the cervical cancer. This technique is based on the capability of placing a discrete mixed neutron and gamma-ray source close to a tumor region, making use of a intrauterine catheter. The dose received in this application is a high level one, type HDL, for a short period of time. Using chemical composts, such as boron organic composts which are ingested by the patient and are absorbed selectively into the tumor cells, the energy deposited on the malignant cells are selectively increased by nuclear reactions such as B (n,α)Li. In contrast, the health cells are preserved. The main goal of this paper consist of the elaboration of graphic displays, which are used to visualize the anatomic parts of the human body in a two or tree-dimensional way. It is possible with this graphics displays to make a friendly interface between the medical staff with the process of planning the therapy. Preliminary results of computational simulations are presented, showing simulations of a radiotherapy plan dealing with a rectum tumor using brachytherapy coupled with BNCT. (author)
