Brachytherapy for cancer treatment
Description
The Makati Medical Center (MMC) is equipped with theratron 80 cobalt-60 unit as well as Siemens Mevatron Linear Accelerator for external beam radiation but a recognized limitation of external beam radiation is the inability to deliver a higher cancericidal dose to the tumor bed and one of the means by which this limitation can be overcome is to deliver radiation directly into the tumor tissue: this is called internal radiation therapy or brachytherapy which allows the radiation source to be implanted inside the body as commonly used to treat cancers
