Description

The authors summarize their experience with stereotactic focal irradiation of gliomas by stating that this technique does not offer any therapeutic gains. All patients had a residual tumour which they died of finally without a major prolongation of median survival having been attained. In addition, their quality of life was often impaired by the high rate of progressive cerebral oedemas and by radiation-induced necrosis of neuronal tissue with corresponding losses in neurological functions. That is why the authors have abandoned this method of central radioseeding of malignant gliomas. (orig./MG)

Abstract (German)

Zusammenfassend ist zu sagen, dass unsere Erfahrungen mit der stereotaktischen Fokalbestrahlung der malignen Gliome keinen therapeutischen Gewinn erkennen lassen. Alle Patienten haben Resttumor und versterben letztlich an diesem Tumor, ohne dass eine wesentliche Verlaengerung des medianen Ueberlebens erreicht werden kann. Hinzu kommt, dass die Lebensqualitaet haeufig durch die hohe Rate von progredienten Hirnoedemen und durch die Strahlennekrose neuronalen Gewebes mit entsprechenden neurologischen Funktionseinbussen erheblich beeintraechtigt wird. Wir haben deshalb diese Methode der Zentralspickung maligner Gliome wieder verlassen. (orig./MG)
