The Preparation of Graft Polymers of Acrylonitrile and Polydimethylsiloxane by Means of Co60 Gamma Rays

Description

A dilatometric study of the rate of polymerization of acrylonitrile in polydimethylsiloxane fluids has been made. The polymerization has been carried out in air and in vacuum. The effects of monomer concentration, radiation intensity and temperature on the polymerisation have been determined. The reaction is found to be kinetically similar to the aqueous solution polymerization of acrylonitrile and a mechanism similar to that put forward by Dainton for the polymerization of acrylonitrile is invoked. At first small radicals grow by rapid addition of monomer. These radicals can undergo termination in a conventional manner. Subsequently there is a slow growth of radicals present in stable suspended particles by the addition of adsorbed monomers. These radicals terminate very slowly as the particles diffuse together. Abstract (French)

Les auteurs ont etudie la vitesse de la polymerisation de l'acrylonitrile dans du polydimethylsiloxane. Ils ont provoque la polymerisation dans l'air et dans le vide. Ils ont determine les effets de la concentration du monomere, de l'intensite du rayonnement et de la temperature sur la polymerisation. Ils ont constate que la reaction est cynetiquement semblable a la polymerisation en solution aqueuse de l'acrylonitrile et que l'on pouvait rapprocher le mecanisme de cette reaction de celui qui a ete mis en evidence par Dainton pour la polymerisation de l'acrylonitrile. Tout d'abord, de petits radicaux s'accroissent par addition rapide de monomere. Ces radicaux peuvent se terminer d'une maniere classique. Par la suite, il y a une lente croissance de radicaux presents dans les particules stables en suspension, par addition de monomeres absorbes. Ces radicaux se terminent tres lentement a mesure que les particules se diffusent. (author)

Abstract (Spanish)

Con el proposito de estudiar por dilatometria la velocidad de polimerizacion del acrilonitrilo, los autores determinaron los efectos que la concentracion del monomero, la intensidad de irradiacion y la temperatura ejercen sobre dicho proceso. La sustancia se disolvio en polidimetilsiloxano y se polimerizo en presencia de aire y en el vacio. Se comprobo que las caracteristicas cineticas de la reaccion son analogas a las de la polimerizacion del acrilonitrilo en solucion acuosa y se propone una interpretacion identica a la formulada por Dainton para la polimerizacion de este ultimo compuesto. Al principio, los pequenos radicales crecen por rapida fijacion de monomero. Estos radicales pueden desaparecer de la manera acostumbrada. A continuacion tiene lugar un lento proceso de crecimiento de los radicales adheridos a las particulas estables en suspension; el proceso se verifica por fijacion de las moleculas de monomero adsorbidas. Estos radicales desaparecen muy lentamente a medida que las particulas se unen como consecuencia de la difusion. (author)

Bylo provedeno dilatometricheskoe izuchenie skorosti polimerizatsii akrilonitrila v polidimetilovom siloksane. Polimerizatsiya byla provedena v usloviyakh vozdukha i v bezvozdushnom prostranstve. Byli opredeleny vozdejstvie kontsentratsii monomera, intensivnosti oblucheniya i temperatury na polimerizatsiyu. Obnaruzheno, chto reaktsiya, s tochki zreniya kinetiki, prokhodit kak i pri polimerizatsii akrilonikrila vodnogo rastvora i primenyaetsya takaya zhe apparatura, kak byla predlozhena dlya polimerizatsii akrilonitrila. Vnachale nebol'shie radikaly uvelichivayutsya bystrym Dobavleniem monomera. Uvelichenie ehtikh radikalov mozhet zakonchit'sya obychnym sposobom. Sootvetstvenno imeetsya medlennoe uvelichenie radikalov, nakhodyashchikhsya v ustojchivykh chastitsakh, nakhodyashchikhsya v podveshennom sostoyanii, pri dobavlenii adsorbnykh monomerov. EHti radikaly prekrashchayut uvelichivat'sya ochen' medlenno po mere togo, kak rasseivayutsya odna za drugoj chastitsy. (author)
