Depolarizing hot gas in clusters of galaxies with a strong double radio source

Description

The present effort to determine the magnetoionic properties of the medium responsible for asymmetric depolarizations, by combining polarization data on strong double-lobed radio sources having one jet with X-ray data, indicates the effect to be probably due to the intracluster medium, which would function as a turbulent Faraday screen. The results obtained for five sources are based on a simple model for synchrotron radiation propagation in a magnetic field configuration consisting of randomly oriented cells. The rms deviations of the intensity, polarization, and Faraday rotation from their respective mean values are diminished as the inverse square root of the number of cells lying either along and/or across the line of sight. 29 refs
