Some effects of temperature, chlorine, and copper on the survival and growth of the coon stripe shrimp

Description

A series of bioassay and growth-rate experiments were conducted on coon stripe shrimp, Pandalus danae, to determine the LL50 value for heat, the LC50 values for chlorine and copper, and the effects of sublethal concentrations of these materials on their growth rate. The critical thermal maxima for three size groups, 1 to 2 g, 4 to 7 g, > 9 g, ranged from 26.3 to 31.80C depending on shrimp size and rate of temperature increase. Bioassays (96 hr) at 10, 15, and 200C were conducted, using chlorine or copper as the toxicant. Growth was measured for 1 month at temperatures between 10 and 250C. The greatest growth occured at 160C. Growth of the shrimp held at 160C while being exposed to sublethal concentrations of both copper and chlorine was studied
