Relativistic two-photon emission: Lifetime of the 2 1S0 state of helium-like Kr34+

  • 1. Department of Physics and Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, California 94720

Description

The two-photon (2E1) decay 2 1S0-1 1S0 in the heliumlike ion Kr34+ has been observed and the lifetime measured. Departures are measured for the first time from the predictions of the nonrelativistic theory, and are sensitive to relativistic effects on the transition-matrix elements. The measured lifetime is tau(measured) = 34.08(0.34) x 10-12 s compared to tau(nonrelativistic) = 31.94(0.01) x 10 -12 s
