Optimizing non-destructive testing training for engineers

Description
Engineers usually acquire the require knowledge and skills for Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) tasks by undergoing level I, II, or III NDT training courses, which are used to quality the NDT technicians under certain certification programs. This paper argues that the offered NDT courses do not match the knowledge required for the engineering tasks. The programs used to train the engineers in NDT are reviewed and the responses to a questionnaire on the viability of the NDT training levels are discussed. The discussion revealed the need for dedicated training contents relevant to engineering jobs. The paper presents proposals for training objectives for the design, manufacturing, production, and maintenance engineers. (author)
