Description

Facility for Management of Alpha contaminated Glove-boxes (FMAG) is being proposed at WIP, Trombay for decommissioning of encased unserviceable alpha contaminated Glove Boxes (GBs). The proposed facility is intended for the volume reduction and also making the waste product amenable for decontamination and final disposal. This proposed facility consists of two alpha tight containments, alpha enclosure 1 (AE-1) and alpha enclosure-2 (AE-2). AE-2 is planned for the de-encasing of encased GB and AE-1 is planned for dismantling of Glove boxes. This paper presents the analysis of environmental impact due to design basis accidents envisaged in the facility. Radiological safety analysis of the proposed facility during normal operations and during accidental scenarios was carried out to estimate the release through WIP stack and the dose to the public. Source terms for individual glove box was estimated (PSAR, FMAG). For normal operations, it is assumed that only one glove box will be cut at a time in AE-1 enclosure. Activity airborne during cutting will pass through 4 stages of HEPA filtration before release through stack. Gaussian plume model for atmospheric releases was used to estimate the dose to public. Annual averaged, sector integrated air concentration at a distance of 1.3 km from the release point is estimated taking site characteristics in to consideration
