Prospects of superconductivity application in controlled thermonuclear research and high-energy physics in Federal Republic of German

Creators

Description

The activity of the Federal Republic of Germany laboratories studying the use of superconductivity in high-energy physics, accelerators, plasma investigations, etc. is described. For the purposes of applied superconductivity, only niobium-titanium alloys and intermetallic compounds based on niobium and tin, vanadium and gallium, and in the future possibly on niobium and germanium, are used. The technical parameters of superconducting (SC) cables are given. The parameters of an SC quadrupole for experiments with a hyperon beam, and of pulsed and detector magnets are presented. An SC linear proton accelerator and an SC HF separator are briefly described. Problems of application of superconductivity in research on controlled fusion are presented. The program of development of these investigations and the questions of selection of a magnetic system for thermonuclear reactor are briefly described. Investigations on the mechanical and thermophysical properties of epoxys and the effect of irradiation on SC materials are elucidated
