The use of neutron attenuation in borated materials as an indicator of their boron content

Description
The prompt neutron γ-rays measurement for boron detection as a nondestructive activation analysis technique was studied. The neutron attenuation through a borated glass samples was measured in order to determine the boron content in glass. The measurements were done by using a hyper-pure Ge-NaI anti-coincidence γ-ray spectrometer for activation of 1 cm square gold foils fixed at the target position, and once more back of each sample. Since the activation of the gold foil fixed at the back of each sample is proportional to the neutron flux captured by the sample, neutron attenuation has been determined. The samples contained different boron concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 0.3%. Results of the mentioned technique, discussion and conclusion are reported in details. (author)
