Measurement of the cross section of pμ-atom scattering in gaseous hydrogen

Description

The cross section for scattering of pμ atoms by hydrogen molecules is measured with the mWon beam from the JINR synchrocyclotron and gaseous hydrogen at a pressure of 41 atm. The value σ(pμ+H2)=(42+-8)x10-21 cm2 is obtained which corresponds to the cross section for scattering by free protons σ(pμ+p)=(17.4+-3.3)x10-21 cm2. The last experimental and theoretical data on the cross section of the pμ+H2 process are given. The cross sections are in good agreement within the limits of errors
