Characteristics of the object SS 433 (V 1343 Aql) as a massive eclipsing binary system

  • 1. P. K. Shternberg State Astronomical Institute

Description

The inverse problem of interpreting the average V light curves of SS 433 in different phases of the 164-day precession period is solved within the framework of the model of a massive eclipsing binary system with a ''floating'' bright accretion disk around the relativistic object. It is shown that this model is consistent with observations of SS 433 on the whole. The contribution of the accretion disk of the total visible luminosity of the SS 433 system reaches 50--60%. The results of the interpretation give reasons to assume that the ''normal'' OB star fills its Roche lobe, while the mass ratio of the components is q = m/sub x//m/sub v/roughly-equal0.3. This may mean that the relativistic object in the SS 433 system is a black hole with a mass of 5--6 M/sub sun/
