Magnetostriction of Ce in Ce/sub x/La/sub 1-//sub x/Al2
- 1. II. Physikalisches Institut der Universitaet zu Koeln, 5000 Koeln 41, Zuelpicher Strasse 77, Federal Republic of Germany
Description
The magnetostriction of the alloy system Ce/sub x/La/sub 1-//sub x/Al2 is reported as a function of magnetic field and temperature for H<5 T and 1.5<T<40 K. It is dominated by the Ce atoms and essentially proportional to the Ce concentration for 0.015<x<1. The volume magnetostriction is abnormally large and can be explained quantitatively by a field-driven shift of the fractional valence of Ce. The anisotropic, volume-conserving part of the magnetostriction is explained quantitatively by field-induced quadrupolar strains associated with the aspherical 4f charge distribution in the trivalent fraction of the Ce atoms
