Separation of tritium from hydrogen by thermal diffusion
- 1. Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory of The University of California, Los Alamos, NM (United States)
Description
In many applications of tritium, a high degree of isotopic purity is necessary. The tritium obtained from neutron irradiation of lithium has associated with it varying amounts of hydrogen. Because of the large ratio of the masses of hydrogen and tritium, almost any separation system will give a large enrichment. In this paper, details are given of a thermal diffusion column to produce large amounts of 99.8% T2, routinely. Special handling techniques have been developed to pump, monitor and analyse the process gases without exposing the operating personnel to dangerous amounts of radiation. The He3 was periodically stripped from the tritium by differential adsorption on charcoal at liquid-nitrogen temperatures. Care M'as taken quantitatively to save this material because of its scientific value. (author)
Abstract (French)
(author)Abstract (Russian)
Vo mnogikh sluchayakh primeneniya tritiya trebuetsya vysokaya stepen' izotopnoj chistoty. Tritij, poluchaemyj nejtronnym oblucheniem litiya, zakhvatyvaet s soboj razlichnye kolichestva vodoroda. Vvidu bol'shogo sootnosheniya mezhdu massami vodoroda i tritiya, kotoroe yavlyaetsya naivysshim vozmozhnym dlya izotopov, pochti vsyakaya sistema razdeleniya dast bol'shoe obogashchenie. Privodyatsya podrobnye dannye o kolonne teplovoj diffuzii dlya proizvodstvennoj vyrabotki bol'shikh kolichestv 99,8-protsentnogo T2. Byli vyrabotany osobye metody vykachivaniya, dozimetricheskogo kontrolya i analiza proizvodimykh gazov bez togo, chtoby podvergat' obsluzhivayushchij personal opasnomu kolichestvu radiatsii. He3 periodicheski otryvalsya ot tritiya posredstvom differentsial'nogo pogloshcheniya drevesnym uglem pri temperature zhidkogo azota. Vvidu bol'shoj tsennosti ehtogo materiala prinimalis' tshchatel'nye mery predostorozhnosti dlya ehkonomii ehtogo materiala. (author)Additional details
