Application of autoradiography in corrosion research

Description
In the anodic dissolution and passivation of iron anions of some electrolytes can participate. The anions have an influence on the rate constants of the dissolution reaction and can be incorporated in the passive layer. In the present paper the results of experiments with labelled electrolytes in the field of anodic dissolution and passivation of iron are presented. The presence of labelled anions at the iron surface and in the passive layer, respectively, was proved by means of autoradiography with stripping films. We have found disctinctive differences between the pure corrosion reaction and the experimentally simulated erosion corrosion by mechanical treatment of the phase boundary metal/electrolyte. (author)
