Electricity industry: privatisation

Attention was drawn to the changed situation in the electricity industry following the Government's decision to retain nuclear power generation in the public sector and the implications of this on the proposed structure for the privatised sector. This gave an opportunity for a debate which lasted one and a half hours and is reported verbatim. The main points raised concerned the suitability of the arrangements for the electricity industry once nuclear power was re-allocated, the security of electricity supply, and adequacy of the capacity, uncertainty over the government's position and the nuclear generating industry generally.
