Electricity market reform and nuclear power in United Kingdom

Description
This paper investigates an impact of electricity market reform on nuclear power generation by making reference to policy change on nuclear energy in United Kingdom. There have been no nuclear power plants' construction plans after 1996 when British Energy, the nuclear operator in UK, canceled its plans. Constructing new nuclear power plants with a huge amount of initial cost faced a severe difficulty under the competitive, liberalized electricity market. However, in 2000s, United Kingdom faced new challenges on climate change and energy security and this made the government to change its nuclear power policy. From case study on United Kingdom, it could be said that policy support in view of climate change and energy security is needed in order to construct new nuclear power plants. (author)
