A PIXE-PIGE system for the quantitative elemental analysis of thin samples

Description

An analytical system based on the simultaneous use of PIXE (particle-induced X-ray emission) and PIGE (proton-induced gamma ray emission) techniques for the elemental analysis of thin samples has been set up at CISE using a 3.5 MV tandem Van de Graaff accelerator. This system allows the advantages of PIXE to be improved by the PIGE capability of providing accurate measurements of light elements. The PIGE technique, so far mainly confined to the analysis of thick samples, has been extended to thin samples of unknown composition and weight, overcoming the difficulties due to the strong energy dependence of the prompt gamma reaction yields. The main features of the PIXE-PIGE system and its application to the analysis of particulate matter and fly ashes are presented. (orig.)
