Description

Based on several contributions, a first document addresses the various technologies of green gas production. Thus, it first addresses methanisation (quick development in France, European development of the bio-methane sector, development in other parts of the world). It discusses the methanisation economic model by outlining that it still must prove its profitability (the present production cost requires public support, and the competitiveness increase can be anticipated). It also discusses the integration of externalities into the economic model and shows that it confers an economic and environmental relevance to this technology. The adaptation of gas networks and the crucial role of mobilizable resources are discussed. The next part addresses two other technologies: pyro-gasification and power-to-gas. The first one possesses an interesting potential on the medium term while power-to-gas is still an hypothesis on a longer term. The issue of carbon capture and storage (CCS) is also briefly addressed: it can find an economic model, but its cost and acceptability issues remain obstacles to its development, and its development depends on CO2 price and a perennial pricing. A second document discusses whether green gas is a fashion trend or a necessity, and how gas can be greened, and presents European examples of methanisation use, and other examples in the world
