Safety analysis of a very-low-level waste landfill

  • 1. Nuclear Research Institute Rez, Rez (Czech Republic)

Description

A model landfill for very low level radioactive waste was set up and analyzed in detail. A normal development scenario, a residence scenario and an intrusion scenario were considered. Sensitivity analysis was performed for the effects of groundwater outflow and the volume and total activities of the waste, and limits were proposed for selected radionuclides. In the model landfill, the total limits for 129I and 239Pu were 100-fold and 9-fold, respectively, exceeded. Volume limits were exceeded especially for metals and partly also for plastics. Among the contamination pathways, the limiting effects include dust deposition on leafy vegetables (for the 2 major radionuclides, 129I a 239Pu) and fish ingestion (for 129I). (orig.)
