Radiation shielding rubber composite applied in nuclear power station

Description
For many applications of radiation shielding rubbers, it is desirable to endow the rubber with high shielding attenuation and excellent radiation resistance. In this work. rubber composites based on ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) were prepared by using carbon blacks (CB) and PbWO4 particles (PW0) as fillers. As the content of PWO was sharply increased, the tensile strength and the hardness of rubber (Eavg∼86.7 KeV, ∼105.4 KeV), Cs-137 (Eavg∼0.6 MeV), and Co-60 (Eavg∼l.2 Mev), were used to evaluate the attenuation behavior of the prepared composites. The results showed that attenuation of gammas for the composites was enhanced with the increasing of PWO fillers, while it was decreased as the increasing of photon energy. At the same time, rubber composites was irradiated for the total dose of 160 kGy at the dose rate of 145 Gy/min. The result showed that the tensile strength and the elongation at break of composites were decreased while the hardness was little increased. The rubber composites with high shielding attenuation and excellent radiation resistance could be used in nuclear power station. (authors)
