A liquid metal protected divertor for a demo reactor

  • 1. Commission of the European Communities, Abingdon (UK). JET Joint Undertaking

Description

The design of a divertor for a demonstration tokamak reactor is described. The target is protected from sputtering damage by a thin layer of liquid tin, chosen for its low vapour pressure at high temperatures. The substrate comprises thin-walled tungsten-rhenium tubes cooled by high pressure water just below the critical point to accommodate the extremely high heat fluxes. High conductance vacuum ducts are required to exhaust the helium generated by the fusion reactions. (author)
