Study of accelerator-based transmutation system using liquid TRU-Alloy target with molten-salt blanket

  • 1. Musashi Institute of Technology, Graduate School of Energy Science and Nuclear Engineering, Tokyo (Japan)

Description

The nuclear and fuel properties of accelerator-driven system (ADS) using liquid TRU-Alloy target were studied by the accelerator-driven transmutation reactor analysis code system (ATRAS) and the liquid-liquid two-phase flow experiments. When the composition of liquid-metal fuel was Pu 40%-MA 60%, 0.965 initial effective multiplication constant was obtained at 27% (Pu 10.8%-MA 16.2%)-Ce 48%-Co 25%, and the constant kept about 0.95 by change of fuel. The hard neutron spectrum suitable for minor-actinide (MA) nuclear transmutation was obtained. 300 g MA can be transmuted by the liquid TRU-Alloy target for a year. The decrease of the effective multiplication constant by mixing molten salt is supplied by increase of composition of (Pu-MA) of fuel. The degree of mixing of liquid-metal into upper plenum set limits to 60%. The back ground, objects, outline of ADS using liquid-metal fuel, flow of liquid metal and molten salt, calculation code, analysis conditions, results and trial flow examination are stated. (S.Y.)
